More congrats To Liz as Newlin Mattie gains her Junior Warrant (subject to usual) following her Best of Breed at Cambuslang.

Well done Louise Bennett whose training and persistence has led to her home-bred youngsters Elli and Simba (above) gaining their Kennel Club  Good Citizen Bronze awards at the ripe old age of seven months.

Congrats to Liz Calikes and Lynn Bailey whose Franjean Candlelight for Salenko JW (imp) gained the final points required for her Show Certificate of Merit award with her recent Best of Breeds. Plans are underway to widen the Best Of Breed column on next year’s results page to accommodate.

A very good day was enjoyed by the Rhiconich Kennels at Dundee Limit show on Dec 6th as Tannahill Odina at Rhiconich went Reserve Best in Show after winning the Hound Group. Rhiconich Finleigh, handled by Ella Findlay, was Special Best Hound Puppy and Ella also won the 6-11 year old Junior Handling with Angus and went on to Best JH overall.

November

Congratulations to the winner of the SBC Christmas Hamper draw, Claire Jones.

Rocamar Smiles At Madika ShCM "Milly" - 01.07.02 - 9.11.15 (Ch. Madika Nut Case x Newlin Lady Molly Of Drumastle)

My sweet little Milly, so soon after Eddie, R.I.P.

Milly was never without her problems after breaking her leg at 10 weeks old. What was considered a straight forward fractured turned into her almost losing her leg, all due to the bandage, it had slipped inside cutting her circulation off on her outer toes and hock. When that bandage was removed the Vet said he was looking at tendons, the flesh had rotted. My poor puppy. The Vet hospital who she was referred to thought she was a road traffic accident !! Against all odds and numerous operations she recovered well and stayed the sweetie that she always was.

Milly did lack confidence and was fearful of dogs she didn't know, not entirely unexpected due to the lack of socialisation in those early months, and had many funny little ways that only she knew why. She adored Russell, slowly licking his face every morning and she would purr like a cat when stroked.

Despite her problems, Milly was very successful in the show ring, she won both Scottish Beagle Club of the year trophies for her wins in 2004. She had 2 xBPIS,a BIS, Qualified for Crufts every year, gained her studbook number, ShCM, passed her K.C.G.C. Bronze and in Ireland won 1 Green Star & 4 Reserve Green Stars. Milly later enjoyed success in the veteran and vintage classes.

Milly was never a typical Beagle, for one thing she never hunted. On one trip to Bo'ness when visiting my sister, Molly and Miles took off hunting and Milly followed, all three simply disappeared. Hours later Molly turned up on my sisters door step, how she found her way we'll never know but Miles and Milly remained missing. Darkness fell and still no sign, then we spotted Miles just walking along beside a man, yes, he'd seen another but she was too scared to come to him. Another hour or so later we found her, poor thing was so pleased to see me, since that day she never followed anyone again no matter how much noise they made, she would just stand and watch them go !

Milly's death is the end of an era, three generations now gone but I couldn't let her suffer. She had taken a turn for the worse and despite the strongest painkillers she still yelped in pain. Sweet loving Milly, what a special girl she was.

October

Congratulations to Liz Calikes who has been enjoying recent success with Newlin Mattie or, to quote Liz, “the worst hooligan I have ever bred!” At Four Counties Open Show in September Mattie was declared Best Puppy in Show under Nick Morgan while her sire, Ch Newlin Victor of Salenko JW ShCM, was Best Veteran in Show and Reserve Best Dog.
The sequence was repeated at Northern & Midland Counties Open Show on October 17th under Judge Mairi Brown where the major winners were all Scots bred beagles.

Mattie was again BPIS while her Dad was again BVIS and RBD. However Mattie went one step better, this time walking off with a Best in Show rosette.

Best Puppy dog and Reserve Best in Show was bred by Lorna Binks in the shape of Christine Lewis’ Tannahill Xander.

Well done all!

Newlin Mattie is pictured left looking like a little angel a few months ago on her way to winning another BPIS award on home soil.

"EDDIE" - Madika Its All About Me ShCM AW(B) 06.10.11 - 22.09.15

Eddie became unwell on the Sunday 20th, on Monday there was no improvement so went to the Vet. Their initial diagnosis was that there was 'something stuck' but X-rays appeared normal. Pancreatitis was then suspected so he was on pain relief and fluids but sadly despite this he died Tuesday morning. The post-mortem revealed Acute Pancreatitis.

Eddie didn't meet the criteria for Pancreatitis being a fit and active young dog. He was shown at Darlington on the Friday (2nd in Limit) and won his class the following day at Four Counties where he was also borrowed by a Junior Handler.

Eddie was excelling at agility and having gained his Agility Warrant (Bronze) in June, he was already half way to gaining his Silver.

He was such a sweet boy, he won at all levels and types of shows but most of all he was a lovely pet with a super nature and will be greatly missed.

September

Well done to Rachel Cuthill who certainly enjoyed her outing at Angus & Kincardine on Sept 27th with Ch Serenaker Othello JW being awarded Reserve Best in Show while kennel mate Ch Serenaker Trial By Magic was declared Best Veteran in Show.

Can’t keep Fiona & Stewart Brannan’s Bute off this page it seems! Further congrats due as Rosanka Nolte JW wins his 2nd RCC, this time at the Welsh Beagle Club under Roger Henningson-Dundas.

Congratulations to Christine Lewis whose Tannahill Xander was Best Puppy in Breed at Darlington under Phil Freer and later went on to Hound Puppy Group 3 under Mr P. Bakewell.

In what must have been a satisfying day for breeder Lorna Binks another Tannahill bred youngster, Fiona Findlay’s T. Odina, won Junior Bitch.

It’s been quite a year for a dog who has featured a few times on this page from the beginning of the year with various significant wins and awards. However Fiona & Stewart Brannan’s youngster Bute - Rosanka Nolte JW - has raised the bar by winning the Reserve CC at Birmingham on Sept. 4th under Judge Mrs Weber-Martegani.

Susan Arden writes of more agility success recently with Eddie, pictured right, who gained the 200th point required for his Agility Warrant Bronze. Eddie is now in Grade 6 along with his mum Emma and now both mother and son have the letters AW(B) after their name. Emma “only” needs one more win to go into the top tier, Grade 7.

A nice double for Liz Calikes at SKC under Sheila Miller winning best of breed with Ch Newlin Kestrel JW ShCM and Best Puppy in Breed with Newlin Mattie.
Kes was shortlisted in the Hound Group but the youngster went a step further to claim Hound Puppy Group 3.

August

It’s August so it must be Ireland, at least for Susan Arden and Hazel Deans. During their recent “mini trip” Hazel’s Flora won the bitch Green Star while daughter Rosie won the Reserve Green Star at Hound Association of Ireland under Portuguese judge  Mr JH De Mello. At Clonmel Flora won the Reserve GS under Wendy Hall. At Killarney Flora added another Green Star and a Best of Breed under Italian judge Mr A. Cuccillato while Susan’s 5 month old puppy Dottie (Madika Spot On) won Reserve Best Baby Puppy in Show under Irish judge Mr E. Patterson .
The sister’s beagles are pictured below in front of Cahir Castle.

Congratulations to Lindsay Moss whose Rhum - aka Dapperdawg Forbidden Isle at Benruadh was Best in Show at Cowal Dog Training Club’s Annual Companion Show on Aug. 9th.

The SBC website logged it’s One Millionth visitor on the morning of Aug. 6th in the shape of club member Ian Warburton, left, and wife Dianne. who received a bottle of Champagne as a “Thank You” from the club.

A group double to report on from Kirkcaldy as Louise Bennett won the Hound Group with Serenaker S’ogni D’Oro at Tacomadream ShCM under “change-of-judge” Fiona Findlay. Suzanne McGiffen made it a double group success for the beagles as she won HPG1 with Misken Fortuna at Ladybrow.

Congratulations to Ella Findlay who, handling 11 month old Angus, won the semi final of the 6-11 year old JHA at the Houndshow Championship show on August 1st. This qualifies Ella for the JHA finals in London on October 18th.

July

Sadly, I have to write of the death of Frank Bothwell last month.  Frank, along with his wife Eleanor, owned and bred the Norcis Beagles making up many champions both at home and overseas. He was also a well respected judge, awarding CCs in several Hound Breeds. Frank was a quiet man, not pushing himself forward in public, but he had a keen eye for a good dog and contributed greatly to the success of the Norcis kennel.

In 2014 he was appointed to the position of Vice- President of the Scottish Beagle Club, a position, sadly, that he held for a very short time. His death was sudden and unexpected and only months after the death of his only child Frank Jnr. This is a double tragedy for this family whose life was so immersed in the betterment of our lovely breed.

Liz Calikes

More success to report for Liz Calikes and Ch Newlin Kestrel JW ShCM as Kes can now add a further CC and Best of Breed, this time at Leeds under Ann Phillips, to his growing list of accolades.

Congratulations also to Sam Goldberg whose youngster Molesend Orlando (AI) gained the final points required for his Junior Warrant at the same show.

Congratulations to Liz Calikes and Ch Newlin Kestrel JW ShCM who won the DCC and BOB at The Beagle Association under Jim Woodcock on July 18th. Liz also won Best Puppy Bitch with Newlin Mattie under Bitch Judge Barbara Roderick. David Craig’s Davricard Brandon was BPIS  while Davricard Moonlight won BCC and was RBIS. Best Veteran in Show was Graham & Serena Parker’s Ch/Ger Ch Serenaker Devil In Disguise.

A couple of “bests” to report from opposite ends of the country and age spectrum ; Liz Calikes’ Newlin Mattie (right, top) was Best Puppy in Breed at East of England under Joan Lennard while Hazel Deans’ Ir Ch Barterhound Bouquet for Gempeni JW ShCM (bottom, right) won AV Hound Veteran and was later declared Best Special Veteran in Show at Fife.

This photo of Serena Parker with Serenaker Fashion winning Minor Puppy Bitch (and the RCC) at SBC was taken only a year ago. A few weeks later Dizzy was BPIB and Hound Puppy Group 3 at Windsor.

One year on and the youngster has enjoyed another Windsor outing - this time picking up Best of Breed and  Hound Group 4 but most importantly winning her 3rd CC to make her the latest Serenaker Champion at the ripe old age of 22 months.

A quick News update ; Ella Findlay had a very nice week towards the end of last month as she won the 6-11 JHA class at Border Union and the following day at SBC won best Junior Handler overall. The following weekend at Blackpool Ella piloted Fiona’s Dutch import Juwel From Marbelles Manor to first place in MPB, BPB and Best Puppy in Breed. As if that wasn’t enough Ella also won the YKC 6-11 yr JH with Angus.

Fiona also grabbed a first place herself with Tannahill Odina at Rhiconich winning Junior Bitch while Liz Calikes won Open Dog with Ch Newlin Kestrel JW ShCM. Fiona & Stewart Brannan made sure the Best Puppy awards both came north of the border from Blackpool as Rosanka Nolte JW was Best Puppy Dog.

Back at SBC Liz and Lynn Bailey’s Franjean Candlelight for Salenko qualified for her Junior Warrant, after winning Graduate Bitch, at the age of 12 months.

Well done all!

June

A couple of “Bests” to report from opposite ends of the country. At Bannf, Moray & Nairn at the end of last month Erica and Doug Matthew had a good day winning BOB & G4 with Carvaha Miss Adelaide and Best Veteran in Show with Carvaha Solitaire ShCM.

At St Andrews, Cupar & District Liz Calikes had similar success although it was the youngster, Newlin Mattie (photo left), who prevailed with Best Special Minor Puppy in Show after Liz won Best of Breed with Franjean Candlelight for Salenko.

May

Well done to Fiona and Stewart Brannan whose 11 month old Rosanka Nolte crossed the line for his Junior Warrant award at Larkhall where he won both Breed classes.

Congratulations to Rachel Cuthill whose Serenaker Othello JW picked up his all-important 3rd CC at the National Dog Show, Birmingham, under judge Linda Hawley. Dyson becomes the second Champion Rachel has made up from the Serenaker kennels and the 5th Champion bred from 21 CC winning Ch&Ir Ch Serenaker Devil Woman JW ShCM.
It was a good day at Birmingham all round for Serena as Dyson’s daughter Serenaker Fashion was declared Best of Breed after winning her second CC a week after her first at Devon & Cornwall.
Ch & Ger Ch Serenaker Devil In Disguise JW was also Best Veteran in Breed.

Congrats also to Wilma and Dick Morrison whose Newlin Iona at Bowerswell qualified for a Show Certificate of Merit award following her Best of Breed win at Kirkcaldy on May 9th.

Congratulations to Richard Ravell who had a good day at Wigton winning BOB and Group 3 with Tungri Peacekeeper.

The star of the day, however, was Richard’s pup Fallowfield Ada in Tungri (pictured left) who was awarded Best Puppy in Show.

Lynn Bailey’s Ch Newlin Victor of Salenko JW ShCM has been busy scooping up more BVIS awards. Following on from his BVIS win at Four Counties Champ show in March, Seamus pipped all the other Golden Oldies at Seaham on May 2nd under Eddie Webster.

April

A quick News round up .......

After a decade at Kelso the Hound Association of Scotland returned to Ingliston for their Champ Show on April 11th. Judge Fiona Findlay found her Best of Breed in the shape of Sarah Jackson’s Ch Bayard Forget Me Knot JW, the 3 ladies pictured left. Best puppy was Molesend Orlando and the only class wins by home-based exhibitors were the Christie’s Benroma Brabanzio, who won PGD, and the Hill’s Dapperdwag Seven Of Nine who won PGB.

Over at the Beagle Club of Northern Ireland under Wal Westren there was a good show by Scottish youngsters - and an “oldie”. Hazel Deans’ Ir Ch Barterhound Bouquet for Gempeni JW ShCM was declared Best Veteran in Show while her kennel mate Gempeni Flower Girl JW ShCM won the PGB class.
Fiona Findlay’s Fallowfield Adored at Rhiconich was piloted to Best Puppy Dog by young Ella Findlay, who has trained Angus herself.
The Hill’s Dapperdawg North Western won Junior Dog while the Brannan’s Rosanka Nolte won 3 classes - Puppy, Graduate and a “Special Open” for dog or bitch any colour other than tri.

Chris Hartland reports a fairly unusual “double Group 2” from Sunderland & District as her Rosie   - Franjean Check Me Out at Fairleedale - was awarded Hound Puppy Group 2 after winning  the Junior class. Grandsire Seamus - Ch Newlin Victor of Salenko JW ShCM - kept things in the family being awarded Best of Breed before his Hound Group 2 placing.

The proud owners are pictured left with Breed judge Andrea Keyte.

Congrats to Sam Goldberg whose Molesend Orlando picked up his second Best Puppy in Show award at Tweedmouth Canine Society on April 3rd. BPIB was awarded under Ann Binks, Hound PG1 under Sandra Johnston and  BPIS was awarded by Best in Show Judge Mr W. Crawley.

Hard to believe it’s been a year already but that’s another Crufts done and dusted.  Christine Lewis took centre stage this time and found her Dog CC winner in Ch Dialynne Maximus, repeating his feat of last year and winning his 4th DCC at Crufts overall.
He was pipped for B.O.B. however by kennel mate Ch D. Electra.

From the home-based Scots who made the trip Rachel Cuthill’s Ch Serenaker Trial By Magic finished 3rd in a class of 11 in Veteran Dog while Fiona & Stewart Brannan’s Rosanka Nolte was declared Best Puppy Dog. “Bute” has had a very promising start to his ring career to date winning the MPD class at Manchester in January followed by a RBPIS at Irvine last month.

Mr & Mrs Christie’s Benroma Brabanzio picked up a VHC in a 13 strong Yearling Dog while in an Open Dog class of 17 Cuthill, Parker and Stevens’ Serenaker Othello JW was second behind the RDCC winner Dialynne Breaking News with Liz Calikes’ Ch Newlin Kestrel JW ShCM in third place.

In the Bitches Calikes and Bailey’s Franjean Candlelight for Salenko was second in Puppy Bitch with Fiona Findlay’s Tannahill Odina at Rhiconich VHC. Fiona picked up another VHC in Limit with Rhiconich Beverley.

Meanwhile Fiona’s granddaughter Ella continues her Junior Handling success picking up a 3rd place from 14 competitors in the 6-11 year YKC event.
